Comprehensive Installation Guidelines for GRP Water Tanks

GRP water tanks, also called “SMC modular water tanks” or “sectional panel water tanks,” are assembled using SMC panels, bolts and nuts, seal components, steel structural parts, and pipe connection flanges. This modular design allows for easy and quick installation. Panels are connected with bolts and nuts, steel support rods, sealing rubber strips, basic channel steel, lacing wire and plates, ladders, manhole covers, and flanges.

Panels can be combined to create tanks of nearly any size—height, diameter, or volume—to fit specific space and capacity requirements. GRP material combines glass fibers with polymer resin, making it significantly stronger than steel by weight. SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) panels are flat-packed, making them easier and more cost-effective to transport. Customers can request custom dimensions, panel thicknesses, and additional accessories to meet their specific needs.

Typical panel sizes include 1000×1000mm, 1000×500mm, 500×500mm, and 1500×1000mm. Panel thickness ranges from 2mm to 18mm depending on tank height. Foundations may be concrete or U-steel bottom bases.

Site Selection and Foundation of Guidelines for GRP Water Tanks

Choose a flat, stable site with sufficient space for the tank and any additional components such as pipes and pumps. The site should allow easy access for maintenance and inspection. The foundation is critical for stability; a concrete base is often recommended, especially for large sectional GRP tanks. Ensure the foundation is level, smooth, and strong enough to support the filled tank’s weight. Concrete plinth flatness should be within a 2mm tolerance. Consider environmental factors such as drainage and sunlight exposure. While GRP tanks are UV-resistant, prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight may affect the tank’s appearance over time.

Panel Arrangement and Assembly

GRP sectional tanks consist of panels bolted together on-site. Begin by arranging the base panels on the prepared foundation. Securely bolt the panels together using the provided gaskets to ensure a watertight seal. For square tanks, panels are often pre-fabricated, requiring minimal assembly. Install internal bracing and stays to prevent bulging of tank walls under pressure, especially for large-capacity tanks. Connect the inlet and outlet pipes to the designated ports, ensuring all connections are sealed and leak-proof. Install an overflow pipe to prevent overfilling and a drainage pipe for maintenance purposes. In colder climates, insulation can prevent freezing, and cladding may be used for protection and aesthetics. After installation, perform a leak test by filling the tank and inspecting all joints and connections.

Water Level and Ventilation

Maintain the water level above the tie rod position, ideally over 85% of the tank height. Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent pressure build-up during filling and emptying.

Maintenance and Inspection

Regular maintenance is essential to extend the lifespan of GRP tanks. Key tasks include:

Cleaning the interior at least twice a year, checking water quality after cleaning. When cleaning one compartment, keep the water level in other compartments below 50%.
Inspecting the tank for cracks, leaks, or signs of wear, paying special attention to joints, connections, and panel deflection (should not exceed 1% of tank height).
Checking internal supports for corrosion and tightening all tie rods as necessary.
Ensuring all connected pipes are properly braced and that the structural supports under the tank are in good condition.
Verifying that overflow fittings and air inlet screens are intact and unobstructed.
Confirming ladders are secure and avoiding damage to joint seals during cleaning.
Avoiding organic solvents such as thinner, acetone, or chlorine bleach for cleaning.
Storing only normal-temperature drinking water; the tank should not be used for other purposes.

For rectangular or square tanks, calculate the volume using:

Volume (V) = Length (L) × Width (W) × Height (H)

The result is in cubic meters (m³). To convert to liters (L), multiply by 1000 (1 m³ = 1000 L).
